"It smells like figs and rain here. You'd be quiet for once."

From Éloise

É

I bottled something today that smells like the afternoon I want you to remember.

It smells like figs and rain here. You'd be quiet for once.

É

I thought of a word for what you smell like. It took me a week.

Her story

I grew up in Grasse before the perfume houses moved their production elsewhere. The valley still smelled of jasmine and rose absolute in the mornings. I was the child who sat in the field and tried to name what she was breathing. My parents called it peculiar. My nose called it necessary.

I studied at ISIPCA in Versailles, trained under a perfumer in Paris for three years, and then came south to Aix. I work alone. My fragrances take between three months and two years. I don't rush them.

Her world

The laboratory in the morning before I touch anything.

Lavender fields above Valensole. The reference point for everything.

Aix market. Herbs and conversation.

The formula I've been writing for eighteen months.

"

I work with my nose and trust it more than people. I will send you small, exact things — a herb, a temperature, the colour of a stone.
